Buy or Sell Gm Blake is weighing both options.

2/1/2024 • Kirk Blake

Will the Colorado Avalanche buy or sell at the TUFHL trade deadline? Gm Blake is weighing both options.

The TUFHL’s trade deadline is approaching, and all options are on the table for the Avalanche

A check of the league’s standings shows the Avalanche where they’ve grown accustomed to being this time of year – always seriously contending, however GM Blake doesn't like the results in the last 10 games (4-6-0) and those results have the wheels turning.

“The players are going to give us true direction where we should go,” Blake said this past week.

Blake has never been known to sit on his hands and that's why I'd expect roster movement in the coming weeks. Because that’s Blake. We've learned quickly that he's not a GM to just sit still.

But what type of movement? Buy or sell?

“We'll get offered a lot of different things," Blake said. “There's other teams that are crunched in terms of salary cap just like us.

However, once teams realize we are willing to move guys like Draisatle, Horvat and Ovechkin the calls will pick up.

Let's be honest those guys don't get moved very often and can put your team over the top."

"Now If we are in there and consistently playing well, then maybe there's a switch of a piece here and there to help the group. All those are in play.”

This franchise needs to starts building toward a future and that started this past offseason when Jake Oettinger was brought in. We do not see a total tear down like we saw Mr White do in Vegas a few years ago but GM Blake has the pieces to move out star players and bring in younger ready to play talent as he did with the Oettinger deal.

That’s why adding players at the trade deadline isn’t off the table, either, if the Avalanche happen to get hot in the coming weeks we can see a star player being moved to bring in the depth the team lacks.

We have heard rumors this past week that Draisatle and Ovechkin are involved in some heavy trade talks.

“The group has shown all the indications that they are doing everything they can,” Blake said. “I've got to do everything I can. We'll help them out (at the trade deadline) if we can.”

The team is continuing to entertain offers to sell players, too, and Blake should. That’s his job. If a top team in need of goal scoring help offers the moon and stars for, let’s say, Draisatle – a possibility floated by TUFHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic – then the Avalanche must at least consider it.
