AFTER 21...
After 21 games played, the Columbus Blue Jackets sit on top of the Metro Div. There have been quite a few close games; for instance - both games against the Detroit Red Wings have gone to a shootout in similar scoring games. On game three, Columbus defeated Detroit 6-5 in a shootout... Eleven games later it was Detroit who beat Columbus 6-5 in a shootout.
Defenseman Travis Sanheim is leading Columbus in points, the surprise to this stat is that he also is tied on the team with the most goals. After having his contract extended in the off season, centre Sean Monahan is making great passes out there and providing a great second line threat. A few weeks ago, a trade involving veteran Jeff Carter was agreed between the teams involved, but there was an unknown contract issue with one of the players involved resulting in the league declining the trade. Despite this, Jeff Carter has remained a professional and has improved his play of late; finding some chemistry on the third line.
UPCOMING
Next for Columbus, is the middle-of-the road team - the Carolina Hurricanes; two points against this Metro rival will help as there are multiple teams who have played less games than Columbus. But the real test will be against the league leading Boston Bruins. Columbus arrives home after the Carolina game and Boston is the first team to come to town, followed by Montreal and Ottawa. A short 3-game home stand before Columbus travels to Boston for a re-match. It is fair to say, after these five games... a better picture of the team and its possibilities will be known.
