Flyers Bring in The Wolf

2/16/2022 • Eric Wolf

With the latest hiring of Eric Wolf, the Flyers organization hope it will put an end to the unstability that has clouded the front offices for the past year and a half. With a revolving door of general managers since 2020, Wolf hopes to put an end to that “It appears there has been a bit of turnover here in Philadelphia, which hasn’t been fair to the players, or the fans.” Wolf said. There is a lot of work to be done, but the new GM is going to play it cautious. “I’m the new guy here, I would be doing a disservice if I came in and started making a ton of changes right off the bat. I need to understand the ins and outs of the league first, I need to assess our teams in Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley, figure out where we stand and how we can move forward as an organization. It appears the team has been somewhat neglected for awhile now by previous GMs, and I can be certain of one thing, that it is going to be put to a stop starting now.” Wolf reassured media at his introductory press conference.

The Flyers see themselves with a 22-16-4 record at the halfway mark of the season, clinging onto the 8th and final playoff position currently. Leaving Wolf and the management team in a precarious position. “I am absolutely thrilled and grateful for the opportunity for the job in Philadelphia, but admittedly this is probably the toughest time to be hired. As much as I would like to be patient, we need to somewhat act swiftly in determining which direction we want to go. The trade deadline is coming, and it doesn’t afford me a whole lot of time to make my own stamp on the team, whereas if you start in the off-season or earlier in the year, you have a lot more time for things like that. So it’s definitely going to be interesting these next few weeks.”

When asked about his initial thoughts on the team, Eric admitted some weaknesses “Based off initial observations, the secondary scoring on this team is an issue, we also aren’t stopping enough pucks – the fact our goalie has been pulled in 10 of our 42 contests is a bit alarming. These are areas I would like to improve, but is there enough time to improve them this season? That’s a hard question to answer. Because the next ‘bigger’ question I have… is this team good enough for me to spend the resources to improve those areas? We’re in the middle of the pack right now, and we have no elite prospects or players in the system to come and save the day. So that is another thing I need to be mindful of. The next few weeks will be critical in how we steer this franchise moving forward.” Wolf concluded in his presser.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Flyers navigate out of this mediocre loop they are stuck in, do they have enough to compete or is a rebuild in the cards? We will find out shortly, but until then, at least the Flyers faithful can sleep better knowing that they have someone officially at the helm of the team that has nothing but the best intentions for the franchise moving forward.
