Why?

Seriously why?

Montreal is a disaster shit show of epic proportions right now.  Despite being one of the top teams in puck posession, shot differential and faceoffs, the team can't seem to put two wins together.  When they outshoot their opponents, they can't score enough goals.  If they do score, the starting goalie blows the game and gets pulled.  Top players like Kane and Giroux are looking a little more average on the ice.  The additions of Hyman and Sheahan have not produced the desired effect.  The powerplay is a disgrace considering the above mentioned advantages the team has in certain stats.

Nick Suzuki, Phil Danault and Jack Roslovic are all great choices at third line center but that means others have to play the wing.  Putting guys in the right positions has been an issue all season long and started with the departure of Max Pacioretty and the arrival of Brent Burns in Montreal.  Although Burns has played quite well for the team, the loss of Pacioretty's offense has left this cup hungry team without the killer instinct and finishing touch that such an elite scorer can bring.  GM Rainville has realized that this trade was a mistake and has been open about it.  Some wonder if the added pressure of playing in a hockey crazed marked coupled with Rainville's comments has made it too much for Burns to endure.  His numbers are down from his time in San Jose.

The cap situation in Montreal is difficult.  The majority of the contracts are required to make this team a winner.  The less desirable contracts are harder to move and unlikely to bring in the talent needed to bolster this team the way it needs, especially in net and on defense.  Romanov has recently been made available.  The idea is to move Romanov with another contract player to make room for a defense who can help the team win today.  Can the habs put this fire out and start winning games consistantly or will big changes be coming to Montreal?  Stay tuned.
