Changes in Free Agent Pay Structure/Salary

10/5/2022 • Remi Rainville

As the league continues to evolve we are seeing player salaries that are becoming out of line with the NHL.  We are introducing a new pay structure for free agents as well as new rules for player buyouts and salary cap.

1) Star Power Players Contracts:

Forwards / Defence
Players 28 and under that have an OV of 78 or above must be signed to a contract of $6 000 000.
Goalies 28 and under that have an OV of 80 or above must be signed to a contract of $5 000 000.

2) Max Salary:

No player can have a salary above 13,500,000$.  This number will fluctuate annually to reflect changes in the salary cap.  Currently the salary cap is 82.5 million.

3) Players ending their entry level contract will have a fixed starting salary for their next contract:

Forwards/ Dman
70ov to 73ov = 2m per year
74ov to 77ov = 3m per year

Goalies
75ov to 76ov = 2m per year
77v to 79ov = 3m per year

Players 69 and lower will follow the current pay raise structure outlined in the rules section.
Goalies 74 and lower will follow the current pay raise structure outlined in the rules section.

4) Off Season Cap:

TUFHL Teams are allowed to go over the cap during the off-season at a maximum of 10% of the league’s salary cap (8.25mil).  Any team over the maximum will not be able to sign free agents until they are back under the maximum cap allowance.

5) Buyouts:

Each TUFHL team may perform 1 buyout per season of a player making $2,000,000 or more on his contract.  Contracts of $1,999,999 or lower may be bought out as often as desired.  The player being bought out is owed 50% of the remaining value of his contract.

The hope is that these changes will keep the league competitive in the long term.  If you have any questions about these changes please send them to me (Habs).
